The principal watchmaker at Mainspring Row trained in movement servicing across Malaysia and spent time with an independent workshop in the Vallée de Joux before returning to Kuala Lumpur. That background covers Swiss lever escapements, Japanese co-axial variants, and German observatory-grade calibres from mid-century pocket watches through to current production.

Instruments that make the work measurable.

A calibrated timing machine, a four-stage ultrasonic cleaning system, a dry-air water resistance tester and a binocular loupe station are the core tools at Mainspring Row. They are not props — they are in daily use and calibrated on a regular schedule. The timing machine readings form part of every service report.

Owner communication

Kept in the loop at each stage, not just at the end.

Most workshops call when the watch is ready. Mainspring Row contacts the owner at three points: when the case is opened and findings are written up, if anything additional is discovered mid-job, and when the watch finishes its test week. Each contact comes with a written note, not a verbal summary that is easy to forget.

The written report that accompanies every service is not a receipt. It is a document covering what was found, what was done, what was measured and what the owner should know going forward. It is designed to be kept with the watch.

The Condition Survey at RM 480 is a complete service in itself — not a deposit. If an owner decides no further work is needed after reading the report, they leave with a documented record of the watch's condition and rate readings.

Pricing

Clear prices. No charges added without agreement.

Mainspring Row publishes three service prices: RM 480 for a Condition Survey, RM 1,540 for a Standard Mechanical Service, and RM 4,700 for a Complication Rebuild Project. External parts — crystals, hands, worn pivots — are quoted separately before any are ordered. There are no bench fees, handling charges or storage costs added at collection.

Four practices that are not standard

The survey that commits to nothing

A Condition Survey is offered as a standalone service. Owners can learn exactly what the movement needs and then decide whether to proceed at their own pace. The survey fee is not a deposit against future work.

Staged approval on complication projects

Complication rebuild projects are approved stage by stage. The owner receives a written proposal first, then a further agreement is required before each subsequent stage begins. No stage is assumed.

Original parts sourcing documented

When a part needs replacing, the source is noted in the report. If a calibre-correct part is not available and a substitution is considered, the owner is informed before anything is fitted.

A permanent service record for the watch

The written report is formatted to be kept with the watch's documentation. It is dated, describes the calibre, lists all work done and gives the timing machine readings — useful for resale or for a future watchmaker.
