A completed watch returned to its owner

Owner experiences

What owners say when the watch comes back.

These are notes from owners who brought their mechanical watches to Jalan Telawi 3 — some for a quick survey, some for a full service, a few for longer complication projects.

Owner notes

From the people who brought their watches in

Brought in my father's old Omega for a condition survey before deciding whether to service it. The watchmaker spent time explaining what he found — worn pivots, a stiff mainspring, and the gaskets had collapsed. The report was clear enough that I understood exactly what I was deciding between. Went ahead with the full service. The watch came back running to spec.

The turnaround on my Rolex Datejust was about five weeks. I was kept in the loop at two points — once when they opened it and found the date-wheel gear had worn more than expected, and once when it finished its test week. The written report they sent home with the watch is genuinely useful; I have it filed with the original papers now.

Did the water resistance check on a watch I was considering buying secondhand. The tester caught a failed seal around the crown that would not have been obvious otherwise. The report gave me something to negotiate with. The survey cost was well worth avoiding a more expensive problem down the road.

My grandfather's IWC Schaffhausen pocket watch had not run reliably in years. I was genuinely unsure whether it was worth restoring. Reza looked at it at intake, said it was serviceable, and the survey report gave me the information I needed to make a sensible decision. The whole service took about six weeks. It now keeps within a minute a day.

Three-hand Longines service. Honest pricing and no additions. The case cleaning was better than I expected — they hand-cleaned the bracelet links individually rather than just polishing the case back. The wait was about five weeks but I was updated when they finished the test period, which was reassuring.

Brought in a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso with a faulty date module. They sent a written proposal within a few days explaining what needed doing and what it would cost. The project took about twelve weeks and involved sourcing a replacement date wheel from a parts supplier in Switzerland. The photographs they sent at each stage were a nice touch I had not expected.

In more detail

Three jobs at the bench

These describe the arc of actual service types — from a straightforward survey to a multi-month complication project.

Case 01 · Condition Survey

The situation

An owner was offered a vintage Zenith El Primero at a private sale. The movement ran but the seller could not confirm service history. The owner wanted an objective reading of condition before completing the purchase.

What was done

The case was opened and the high-frequency movement was measured on the timing machine. Rate deviation was within normal range. The gaskets had dried and would need replacing before any water exposure. A list of deferred items was provided.

The outcome

The owner completed the purchase, having a written record of the movement's current condition. The survey took 2 working days. The owner returned three months later for a standard service.

"The survey report gave me something concrete to work with. I knew exactly what the watch was before handing over the money."

Case 02 · Standard Mechanical Service

The situation

A 1980s Seiko King Seiko that had not been serviced in over a decade. The owner noticed it was losing around four minutes a day and had become difficult to wind. The date had also stopped changing reliably at midnight.

What was done

Full disassembly and multi-stage cleaning. The mainspring was fatigued and replaced. The keyless works were worn — the setting lever spring was renewed. Lubrication to spec, six-position regulation, one week on test. Date issue resolved with recalibration of the day-date wheel engagement.

The outcome

Regulation settled at +4 seconds per day across positions. Date now changes cleanly at 11:55 pm — earlier than the original spec but predictable. Returned in week five. Owner reported consistent rate three months later.

"My grandfather owned this watch for thirty years. Having it running properly again was worth the wait."

Case 03 · Complication Rebuild

The situation

A Patek Philippe Annual Calendar that had been repaired locally several years earlier. The calendar was advancing two days at a time on the 30-day change and the moon phase disc had a small crack near the pin that drives it.

What was done

Written proposal sent after opening. Module stripped separately. The programme wheel driving the annual calendar had a worn tooth. A replacement was sourced from an authorised parts distributor in Switzerland. Moon phase disc replaced. Full reassembly, regulation and two weeks on test.

The outcome

Annual calendar function restored — date advances correctly across 30- and 31-day months. Moon phase tracking confirmed accurate. Project took fourteen weeks including parts shipment time. Eight photographs documenting progress were included in the handover file.

"The proposal before starting and the photographs during the job made a slow project feel manageable. I knew what was happening at each stage."
